Online FAQs

Online learning is an innovative development in education that uses the Internet to facilitate learning without limitations of time and place. Monroe University makes it possible for students to take classes without attending regular classroom sessions. Online learning students use state-of-the-art technology to communicate with fellow students, faculty, and administrators. The great advantage of online learning is that it gives students the opportunity to balance their educational priorities with work, family, and other responsibilities.

Most online courses offered at Monroe University are three-credit college courses. (Some accounting courses are four credits.) These courses satisfy the academic standards of college and regional accreditation requirements for online instruction. 

Monroe University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). MSCHE is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation.

All communication with the professor and class is online. Professors provide course materials from textbooks, lectures, references, and online class activities. Class discussions are facilitated through Internet discussion boards or live chat sessions. A course calendar, syllabus, reading assignments, assignment deadlines, and other instructions are posted on the course web site.

Weekly coursework includes chapters and topic readings, required submission of homework, and class activities, including discussion boards. Homework assignments and term projects are submitted to your professor through course management software. Homework assignments and projects are graded on a timely basis and returned to you through the course management system, as well as by email.

Quizzes, mid-semester exams, and final exams are posted and completed online and then submitted to instructors through course management software. These quizzes and exams are then graded and returned to you according to specified schedules. Final exams are not returned. In some instances, you may be asked to take a proctored exam. In this case, you will either come to one of our campuses or arrange for a proctored exam location close to your home. We sometimes proctor exams to make sure we maintain the integrity of our online programs.

Your instructor requires a certain level of online participation for particular class topics and discussions. These discussions generally take place on the weekly discussion boards. These represent your class participation and form part of your overall course grade.

You communicate one-on-one with instructors or students using the course management system. Your instructor will be available to you during set office hours that are posted on the course site. You can also communicate with your instructor by phone.
