Monroe’s 18-credit certificate program will help you create a solid foundation to participate in the dramatic expansion of digital food and beverage marketing. The Curriculum
The certificate program in Food Media Studies is designed to develop skills leading to the promotion of a food product or service through a focus on the entrepreneurial use of personalized branding and marketing. Students of the program will develop proficiencies in food writing and research, content editing and management, social media management, food photography, website development, and related e-commerce.
Food Styling and Photography
This course will introduce the skills and understanding needed to create visual content and story-telling using basic food photography. The course requires no prior photography of food-styling knowledge and is taught from the perspective that students have never picked up a camera, styled a plate of food, or placed a food product into a visual context. The course will weave together the art and practical requirements needed to release images into the digital domain through a variety of social media outlets not limited to Instagram and Pinterest. The focus will be on food “storytelling,” food styling for maximum impact, scene composition, photo shooting, image processing and finally sharing the finished work commensurate with the students practiced skill level. Students will be required to maintain a photo journal or blog to share their work with their classmates.
Careers
More than 90% of retail food industry brands use 2 or more social media channels – the three most engaging types of content on social media are written articles, videos, and images. Restaurants that respond to customers on social media have an advantage, since nearly three quarters of customers say they’re more likely to recommend a company that responds quickly to them on social media.
Food Writer
Chances are, if you’re reading this, you enjoy reading about cuisine. You probably have a few things to say about it yourself. Maybe you want to write a cookbook; maybe you want to review restaurants; or maybe you want to introduce readers to new cultures and cuisines. Our course in Food Writing and Blogging will get you on your way to becoming a food journalist, food critic, or simply an expert copywriter when promoting your own recipes.
Food Stylist
You may have created the perfect meal, but to draw an audience, it also has to be picture perfect. That’s the job of a food stylist. Food stylists will have the skill to develop new recipes, source premium ingredients, and prepare meals from scratch — but they’ll also know how to photograph it for maximum impact. Our Food Styling and Photography course will give you a solid grounding in prop styling, lighting, and composition, so you can present meals that look as good as they taste.
