That’s why the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that by 2031, there will be 682,000 new jobs in computer and information technology. It’s likely that jobs in computer information systems will grow at a rate of 15%, nearly three times the average for all occupations.

Curriculum
We designed the BS in Computer Information Systems to provide a foundation in more than hardware and software. It’s designed to give you the tools you need to keep growing in your career.
In addition to technical proficiency, you’ll develop your skills as a manager, team builder, critical thinker, and communicator. As you work toward your degree, you’ll learn about:
- Cisco networking & CyberOps
- Database management & administration
- Network security
- Project management
- System analysis & design
- Wireless technology
- Web design
- Programming
You’ll also have a choice of advanced electives that you can use to concentrate on a particular area of interest, such as networking, databases, web development, security, or programming. Furthermore, you’ll learn from seasoned professionals in the field. Your instructors will bring to the classroom decades of experience as software engineers, network analysts, database administrators, web designers, project managers, and even chief information officers (CIOs).
By the time you graduate, you’ll be ready to earn valuable industry-recognized certifications, including the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and the CompTIA A+, Security+, and Network+.
How Long Does It Take to Get a BS in Computer Information Systems?
We designed the Bachelor’s in Computer Information Systems to take just eight (8) semesters on campus. Full-time students can finish their degree in less than three (3) years.
Computer Information Systems Degree Requirements:
- 120 total credits
- 57 credits of major-related courses
- 63 credits of general education and related courses

Object Oriented Programming
Object-oriented programming (OOP) is one of the most widely used programming paradigms for software developers. Understanding it is essential for anyone working in JavaScript, C++, Java, Python, and other programming languages. In this course, students will work in Python to develop a command of OOP fundamentals, including data types, control structures, algorithm development, and program design with functions. To understand how OOP can help solve real-world challenges, students will design practical software applications employing graphical user interfaces, graphics, and network communications.
Admission Requirements
Candidates for a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Information Systems must meet the following general admissions requirements:
- Applicants must possess either a high school graduation credential or high school equivalency diploma, or a recognized college associate degree or higher as listed in the transfer admissions policy.
- Candidates must also submit a completed application for admission, as well as a personal statement or essay.
CIS applicants also participate in a pre-admission interview.

- Monroe is proud to sponsor a chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society (with headquarters right here in New York). ACM members have access to competitions, seminars, lectures, workshops, and networking opportunities held throughout the year.
- The Information Technology Student Association (ITSA) holds weekly meetings where students in the School of Information Technology can exchange ideas and insights. The group also holds regular events, hosting visiting speakers and organizing exciting tech challenges. In addition, members volunteer their services to businesses in the surrounding community.
