It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in: there’s not a business out there that doesn’t rely on computer information systems to keep it running. But who keeps those systems running smoothly?
From family-owned businesses to publicly-traded corporations, every organization depends on information technology (IT) professionals to make sure their technology not only keeps things running day to day, but gives them a competitive edge as well.
To succeed in the world of IT, you need a competitive edge, too. With Monroe University’s online Associate of Science in Computer Information Systems (CIS), you’ll get one. You’ll gain the knowledge you need to start your technology career and the skills you’ll need to keep up with a rapidly-changing field.

Why a Major in CIS?
It’s not just that there’s always been a need for skilled, ethical IT professionals in the business world, it’s that there likely always will be. According to projections by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in computer and information technology will grow by 15% over the next several years — outpacing overall job growth by three times the average rate. By 2031, there will be roughly 682,800 new jobs in computer information systems.
It only makes sense that you should be able to use technology to earn a degree in technology. That’s why Monroe’s School of Information Technology makes it possible for you to earn your degree entirely online, on a schedule that works with your busy life.
As a Computer Information Systems major, you’ll be taking on new responsibilities in addition to the ones you already have. That’s why we’ve made it easier for you to do it all, with learning technologies that bring the classroom to you.
Online Curriculum
Monroe’s fully accredited online Computer Information Systems degree boasts the same in-depth curriculum as our on campus program. Over the course of your studies, you’ll become proficient in multiple programming languages, including C++, Structured Query Language (SQL), Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
You’ll also build the practical, analytical, and theoretical foundations you need to launch a career in information systems and services:
- Systems analysis & design
- Wireless technology
- Database management
- Programming logic
- Web design
- Security
- Cisco networking
The value of these concepts will be clear from the very beginning, because the people teaching them have seen how they work in the real world. Your instructors will be network analysts, database administrators, computer and information systems managers, web designers, software engineers, and even chief information officers (CIOs) at thriving businesses.
By the time you complete your CIS degree, you’ll be fully prepared to earn industry-standard certifications, such as the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), CompTIA A+ and CompTIAA Security + — must-haves for careers in computer information systems.

The Online Module: 2 Courses, 7½ Weeks
If you want to see whether online learning is right for you, you don’t have to commit to a full year, or even a full semester, right away. Monroe University offers students the option to take just two (2) classes over an abridged 7½-week module. You can then decide whether to continue for the whole 15-week semester, knowing that the credits you’ve already earned apply toward your degree.
Web Design Technology
We’ve all seen impressive, attractive web pages, but what makes an effective web page? Long before you introduce design elements, building a successful website takes planning. This course teaches CIS majors how to create, format, and refine web pages using a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) editor. Students will learn how to incorporate text, images, hyperlinks, lists, tables, frames, and forms to a website, as well as how to use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to maximize a site’s impact.
Admission Requirements
Candidates for an online Computer Information Systems degree must fulfill the following admissions requirements:
- Candidates must possess either a high school graduation credential or high school equivalency diploma, or a recognized college associate degree or higher as listed in the transfer admissions policy.
- Candidates must also submit a completed application for admission, as well as a personal statement or essay.
Online CIS applicants also participate in a pre-admission interview.
