About the FAFSA
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form you’ll complete every year. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid uses it to determine the amount of Federal grants, loans, and/or work study funds you qualify for.
Watch our video on how to complete the FAFSA step by step.
New York State uses its own application. If you are a New York State resident, you can find a link at the end of the FAFSA application to help determine your state aid.
Completing the FAFSA for the First Time
Create your Federal Student Aid ID
Make sure you and your contributors create a StudentAid.gov account as soon as possible to be ready when the 2024-25 FAFSA form launches. It is important that you use a personal email account that you will continue to use after graduating high school. Watch a video on creating a StudentAid.gov account.

NOTES: If a required contributor refuses to provide their information, signature, consent and approval to have their federal tax information (FTI) transferred directly from the IRS into the FAFSA form, the student’s FAFSA will be incomplete, making the student ineligible for federal student aid.
Meet with a Financial Aid Advisor if there are circumstances which prevent you from obtaining parental information.
