We are so excited to welcome you to our Au Pair Academy at Monroe University. Our continuing education classes are offered virtually and on campus (located at 145 Huguenot Street, New Rochelle). Our staff has been working with au pairs for many years and understands your academic and career needs. We look forward to welcoming you to our vibrant and supportive college community.
Summer 2024 Schedule
TOEFL iBT Preparation
The TOEFL test is the world’s most trusted English-language assessment. It is considered the gold-standard for determining college readiness and is accepted by more than 11,000 universities and other institutions in over 150 countries. This course will provide a general overview of the exam while focusing specifically on helping you receive your personal best score in the grammar and writing section. Because these sections tend to be the most challenging for exam-takers, our instructor will share her expertise and guide you to success.

Hours / Weeks: 36 hours, 3 weeks
Dates: 6/25 – 7/18 (no class on 7/4)
Times: Tuesday & Thursday night 7pm – 10pm

Evening ESL: Speaking American
Students will improve their ability to speak fluently and accurately as well as to listen and understand. To strengthen your verbal and listening communication skills, you will practice negotiating a variety of everyday situations. Instructors will use materials taken from textbooks and pop culture such as in TV shows and movies to practice fun and interactive dialogs and role-plays. You will build vocabulary and grammatical understanding in the context of real-world situations. You will also work on the multiple aspects of pronunciation, including rhythm and stress.

Dates: 7/8-8/12
Times: Monday and Wednesday 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Weekend Intensive: Personality Psychology
Develop a better understanding of your personality and of what “makes you tick.” Take a variety of personality assessments that pinpoint the person you are and the person you have the potential to become. Learn how genes interact with the environment and life experiences to produce one's personality. With the assistance of your instructor and classmates, identify and leverage your personality strengths to generate successful relationships, career success, and better mental health.
Hours: 36 hours, weekend + post assignment
Dates: 6/29-6/30, post assignment due 7/30
Times: Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Educational Psychology of Kids
Educational psychologists aim to understand how kids learn and find ways to improve learning outcomes. They apply psychological science to promote educational success for all students. In this course, we’ll unpack current research on learning, development, and motivation to learn how kids' brains work and which techniques are most likely to engage and inspire growing minds. We’ll also delve into the relationship between social-emotional and cognitive skills, explore character education, strategies for promoting student motivation, fostering a powerful work ethic, and increasing student achievement. Application-based examples, interactive case studies, and video analysis exercises will help you connect educational psychology to real children and classrooms. This course will prove helpful not only for current or prospective educators and psychologists but for anyone working with children and helping them with learning.

Speaking and Listening
Improve conversational fluency and listening comprehension. This class focuses on communicating ideas in English. Audio, video and reading materials are used for conversation topics and for developing listening skills. Student will improve their pronunciation and fluency through controlled and free practice activities.

Conversation Skills
You will be expected to communicate in many ways during your academic career including participating in activities such as one-on-one and group discussions and engaging with project teams. Learn language and communication techniques in the context of your real-world situations. You will also learn note-taking, summarizing, outlining, and “word cloud” idea organization techniques that will support your academic and professional lives.

Grammar and Writing
Learn grammar in the context of real-world writing situations and through controlled exercises from the textbook. Learn how to correct your mistakes and improve your writing by editing and revising your papers. Students will also learn to interact in a variety of way including writing professional emails, participating in academic chat rooms, and creating written materials for slides and other presentations.

Reading and Vocabulary
Learn different reading strategies and skills to increase vocabulary and reading comprehension. Read a variety of newspaper and magazine articles, novels and stories, and academic texts to learn how to apply these strategies and skills.

Degree Courses for Au Pairs
Au pairs may enroll in up to two undergraduate credit-bearing courses as for $800 each including administrative, technology, and tuition fees. These credits can be used toward a degree at Monroe University or transferred to another college or university. Au Pair Scholarships
Au pairs who take at least one Au Pair Academy course are entitled to up to a $2,500 per semester discount if they apply for an undergraduate degree or up to a $1,500 discount for a master’s degree at Monroe University. Why should I choose the Au Pair Academy at Monroe University?
Our staff is the designers of the original and premier au pair program in the tri-state area. We pride ourselves on providing the highest quality courses that match your educational and professional needs at the most affordable prices available.
Can I earn my au pair credits/hours at the Au Pair Academy?
Yes, Monroe University is an accredited degree-granting post-secondary academic institution that allows us to issue education hours /credits certificates to au pairs.
How can I register for courses?
It’s easy. See the “Register Here” button associated with each of the courses. Click the button and follow the instructions.
Can I take courses online?
We are currently running online and on-campus courses, but The U.S Department of State which oversees au pair visas expects students to study face-to-face when possible. As of 9/1/22, all au pair courses will require on-campus participation.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes, once our administration has verified with the professor that you have completed the requirements for your course, we will send you a certificate in an email. You will easily be able to upload that certificate to your au pair company portal.
Will I receive an ID?
Students whose courses run for six or more weeks will receive a student ID. If students need proof of registration, we can provide a letter of verification. When you register for a course, students will present a letter of registration and ID to security personnel once we begin in-class courses again.
Is there parking at Monroe University?
There is street parking on Main and surrounding streets. There is also reasonably priced parking at the New Roc City Garage. We will provide specific parking information once you register for classes.
May I bring my host children to class?
Unfortunately, due to legal liability, we cannot allow children to attend classes for any reason.
May I bring a friend to the class?
Instructors have the right to accept or refuse any visitors or observers. You may bring a friend to one class with advance permission from the instructor.
Will my professor give me a reference?
Personal references will be provided at the discretion of each professor. The director of the Au Pair Academy will provide a letter of completion upon request.

Are there scholarships available for international students?
International Scholarships (INTS) are awarded to new-to-Monroe undergraduate international F1 matriculated students with an excellent record of academic performance at their high school or prior college; e.g. 3.0 or higher GPA. These scholarships are available to undergraduate students only. Scholarships and grants do not apply to au pair courses.
What TOEFL score does Monroe University require for undergraduate and graduate admission?
Students are recommended to achieve a 65 for undergraduate and 80 to gain admission to Monroe Colleges programs.

Course Completion Certificates
Once we have verified that you have completed the requirements for your course, we will send you a certificate in an email within 7 business days. You will upload that certificate to your au pair company portal.
Important Note: please use the exact name in your passport when registering. This is the name that will be used for your certificate and must match your passport for visa purposes.
Refund Policy
100% refund until the start of the 2nd course meeting. 0% refund once the 2nd class meeting begins. Refund requests must be made by email to the director at yortizdice@monroecollege.edu before the start of the 2nd class meeting. The above policy extends to all au pairs, including those in rematch or experiencing work schedule changes. Refunds can take up to two weeks to appear on your credit card statement.
