Monroe Welcomes Scottish Dignitaries and the Country's National Chef, Gary Maclean, for Visit with Culinary Students

The first week in April is always a big one in New York for those who trace their family lineage back to Scotland. Known as “Tartan Week,” this annual celebration honors the “outstanding achievements and contributions made by Scottish Americans to the United States.”

This year, the spirit of Tartan Week found its way to New Rochelle as Monroe College welcomed several Scottish dignitaries to campus, including Angus Robertson MSP, the Scottish Government's Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution, External Affairs, and Culture.

Cabinet Secretary Robertson; Rory Hedderly, Deputy Head of the Scottish Government in the USA; John Primrose, Deputy Director of Scottish Government International relations; and other representatives from the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. came to Monroe for a special on-site culinary demonstration showcasing the wonderful seafoods of Scotland.

The cooking demonstration was led by Chef Gary Maclean, one of Scotland’s most awarded, accomplished, and high-profile celebrity chefs.

The winner of Britain’s version of MasterChef: The Professionals, Chef Gary was appointed Scotland's National Chef by the Scottish Government to promote the country as a “Good Food Nation.” Our Culinary Institute of New York (CINY) students were captivated by his technique, impeccable flavors, and the life lessons he shared with them.

After watching the cooking demonstration with President Marc Jerome, our special guests spent a relaxing lunch on campus learning more about the College and its students. They were delighted to hear the College is taking good care of its students from Scotland, including the three Scottish students on our Division I women’s soccer team.

Dr. Paul Little, the head of City of Glasgow College in Scotland was also in attendance. He was eager to speak to Frank Costantino, dean of our School of Hospitality Management, about potential exchange programs between our culinary programs. Chef Gary is Executive Chef at his institution.

It was a wonderful visit and an experience that our culinary students will not soon forget.

Kudos to Dean Costantino for setting up this special event.
