Undergraduate Degree Assessment Guidelines
- For applicants from countries where English is the primary language and who have earned a high school diploma or associate degree in English:
Monroe will waive the English test requirement. The 350-word admissions essay will be reviewed by the English department for placement into the correct English level course. - For applicants from countries where English is not the primary language but who have earned a high school diploma or associate degree in English:

Applicants who are required to take an English test must take one of the tests listed below and score the following for direct admissions to undergraduate degree programs. The college recommends the Duolingo as best option based on convenience and price. Students who qualify academically for admission for a degree program but do not meet the need of English standard, will be advised to study ESL at Monroe’s English Language Institute before being fully accepted to a degree program.

King Graduate Assessment Guidelines
- For applicants from countries where the primary language is English and who have earned a bachelor’s degree in English:
Monroe will waive English test requirement and the writing assessment requirement. - For applicants from countries where the primary language is not English but who have earned a bachelor degree or first master’s degree at an English language college or university:
- Monroe will still require the Duolingo, IELTS or TOEFL exams. Students with a prior Master’s degree from a U.S. university will be exempt from the English Test requirement and writing assessment.
- All other applicants must submit TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score and take the writing assessment. Please note the Duolingo test is preferred

Accepted ESL Students: English Language Proficiency
Monroe offers a multi-level program. Full-time admitted students must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score from the last 18 months or take the Duolingo English Assessment upon acceptance to the program.
The Duolingo English Test which is an online English proficiency test that can be taken online, on-demand, in under an hour for only $49. The test is taken via a computer with a camera and includes a proficiency score, video interview, and writing sample which are shared with Monroe University when you send your results. Certified results are available within 48 hours of the test sessions.
