Overview

This Policy Statement provides notice of the University's expectations and guidelines to all who use and manage IT resources and services (including but not limited to computing, networking, communications and telecommunication systems, infrastructure, hardware, software, data, databases, personnel, procedures, and physical facilities).

The University's network and any other computing and data resources, College equipment purchased, obtained and/or donated to the University, whether or not such computing resources are connected to the University's network, is the sole property of Monroe University inclusive of all software on the systems (desktops, laptops, projectors, etc.). Students, staff, faculty, consultants, contractors, temporary employees, and other workers at the University, including personnel affiliated with third parties at such time they are using any IT resources, are responsible for reading, understanding, abiding by, and bound by the Policies stated herein.

Authority

This policy is under the approval, acceptance, and oversight of the Information Technology Committee. Technical review, coordination, and final dissemination of this document are under the direction and authority of the Information Technology Department.

Responsibilities

Only authorized members of the Monroe University community are extended the privilege to access and use IT resources and services. Access and use is limited to the purposes that are consistent with the instructional, research, and administrative goals of the University and the user's relationship to those goals. Access or use that is not consistent with these goals may be prohibited and may result in sanctions imposed by the appropriate College authorities.

Users are advised that they may also be subject to international, federal, state, and local laws holding them personally responsible for their own actions in connection with computing access and use. Staff, students, and/or faculty are not allowed to load any software onto Monroe University-owned equipment.

In consideration of the privilege of accessing and using IT resources and services, all persons are expected to comply fully with the standards and responsibilities of acceptable use as outlined in:

  • All applicable provisions of the Code of Conduct, employee handbooks and agreements, student handbooks, and other policies and procedures established by the Administrative offices of Monroe University;
  • IT Policies and Procedures, including the Statement of Prohibited Uses;
  • All local, state, federal, and international laws, including, but not limited to, copyright and intellectual property;
  • All software license agreements acquired by the University and its authorized units; and,
  • All applicable policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, sexual harassment, academic dishonesty, non-discrimination, copyright, intellectual property, and internet usage.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Respecting authorial integrity and the intellectual property rights of others, and
  • Preventing and reporting viruses that infect computer systems.
